utilizing the holy spirit in the digital age with samantha tucker
We live in the age of social media, where trends fade faster than they began and comparison is an all too familiar roommate. The world is always concerned with images and misplacing validation. The feelings of inadequacy have never been more prevalent. Meaningless worldly things promise shallow fulfillment, but fruitful abundance comes from God.
“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8
Right now, if you were to scroll through your socials, you would see an endless glorification mirage. We see everyone's highest of highs and no room for lows. We are left with the impression that a picture-perfect lifestyle is obtainable. We, believers, have fallen for this trap too. The more time we spend anxiously fixated on others' blessings, the more of an opportunity we give ourselves to manifest thoughts of comparison, and feelings of isolation. Social media has quickly become a tool for spiritual warfare, which is why we need the gift of discernment from The Holy Spirit to help us navigate this unrestricted area.
“Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:6–10
However, social media can be utilized as a fruitful vessel to spread the goodness of God, but we must proceed with caution. Social Media is a playground of sin, so as children of God, we are responsible for using our online presence for the kingdom of God. As a believer, it is important to share life with vulnerability; when we shed off the layer of false perfection, that is when we can have a more genuine online presence. Showing up intentionally creates intentional relationships. Something as simple as taking prayer requests from online friends, to sharing your devotional notes.
