In the year of our Lord 2021, everyone thinks they’v got skincare figured out. You hear all the think pieces from estheticians on what needs to be done. Now some advice just sounds crazy but there a few things that we've learned actually need to be implemented into our everyday skincare routine. Here’s five mistakes you’ve probably been making regarding your face washing routine and how to fix them.

  1. Using a brush to wash your face

Unfortunately, though we may feel like these battery-operated brushes help get our face squeaky clean, think of how much dirt and bacteria can be trapped in the bristles of the brush. Everytime you use it, you’re getting that grime on your face, while trying to wash your face. Bad combo friend, bad combo. What’s suggested is to actually wash your face with your hands. May seem weird at first, but once you’ve done it enough times you’ll get used to it.

2. Not washing your hands before you wash your face

For those of us that have ditched our face brushes and turned to using our hands, it’s vital that we wash our hands before we use them to wash our face. Think of all the dirt, bacteria, and grime on your hands that you can’t see. To be sure that you’re actually cleaning your face, its best to start with clean hands. Yes, soap and water to your hands. So fresh and so clean.

3. Cutting wash time short

When washing your face, do you just splash a little water on, mix your facial cleanser, do a little a rub around, rinse, and done? Friend, its time to dedicate some TLC to your face. Yes you read that right. Anytime you wash your face, it should be for at least 60 seconds. We have LAbeautyologist to thank for this rule that should be in everyone’s routine. Washing your face for 60 seconds allots enough time for the product to actually do what its supposed to do for your face.

4.Washing your face last in the shower

Estheticians are suggesting that we apply our facial cleanser to our face when we first get into the shower. We’re told to APPLY it and then let it SIT. Yes, leave it be for the duration of your shower. So apply, let it sit, scrub a dub dub, and then at the end of your shower you wash your face for at least 60 seconds remember? Amen! Letting your facial cleanser sit on your face for the duration of your shower allows for the steam from your shower and your cleanser to work together to really penetrate into your pores and ensure optimal saturation.

5. Using your bath towel to dry your face

a. Ditch. The. Bath. Towel. Your bath towel is used for your body. You just dried your lady bits and now you’re using that same towel to dry your face?! Okay you’re right this is a no judgement zone. Instead of that bath towel, look to use something that you can use and then throw away. A few examples of disposable items you can use to dry your face are cotton rounds, cotton balls, or disposable face towels.
